AWS Summer Residential

 GUIDANCE NOTES
Important Background Information:
1.1 The Royal British Legion (RBL) Poppy Adventure Breaks are residential experiences for young people from families with at least one parent currently serving or from the ex-service community. Adventure Breaks provide young people with accommodation on a full board basis with a complete range of activities. The break can provide children with a fantastic experience and provide parents with a well deserved break.
1.2 To be eligible for a break, participants must be between 8 – 17 years of age and meet at least one of the following RBL criteria:
·          From a household where the child has difficulty socialising, lacks confidence and self esteem.
·          Where the family have not had a holiday away from home in the last two (2) years.
·          From a family experiencing health or emotional difficulties, as a result of one of the parent’s service in the Armed Forces, prolonged separation, bereavement or break up of the family.
·          From a family experiencing, hardship and/or distress caused as a result of a family service member being deployed on overseas operations.
·          From a family where a parent is caring for a disabled parent or a child is caring for a disabled parent.

1.3 In recent years the breaks have been provided by a commercial adventure holiday company with individuals applying directly to the RBL. With immediate effect the RBL are redirecting some of their funding support to the Community Support section of the Army Welfare Service. RBL support will cover the cost of accommodation, activities and (if required) transport for Adventure Breaks that are organised and led by AWS Community Support staff.

Tickets For Troops-see below

Please forgive me for emailing out of the blue but I am a director of the charity Tickets For Troops.

So far nearly 90,000 troops have registered with the scheme but, in certain areas, there are still lots of troops who haven't heard of the charity which is a great shame given the huge amount of support we receive from so many major sporting, musical and cultural organisations.   We want to make sure all the tickets we are donated are taken up!

Details of the fantastic array of tickets we have can be seen at http://www.ticketsfortroops.org.uk/.

If you can help us publicise TFT in any way please do get in touch with me at raleigh.addington@ticketsfortroops.org.uk

If you want us to send posters or banners to go up in prominent places in your base please do send us your address and we will send them to you.

Railway Museum update

Hi everyone.

Just a very short note to say the trip is definetely on for Wednesday 20th April, (tomorrow).

Transport leaves the Community Centre at 0930 and will depart from the Railway Museum at 1630 for the return trip. Have a look at the Railway Museum web page and see all the attractions the centre has running. We have managed to secure free entry to some of the attractions, for which you would normally pay, so it is an even better value trip than normal! Please remember a packed lunch and drink will be required.

So far we have over twenty five people coming for the day out. This means there is still space on the coach for more. So if you have not yet signed up to join us on this excellent day out, then get in touch today, and I'll add you to the numbers. Parents/guardians are more than welcome and at just a £1 per person, this must be the cheapest day out you will have this Easter holiday!

The team from AWS and Dishforth Airfield Youth Club look forward to seeing you.

Bernie. 07887804012.

Notice to all occupants;

There has been a recent increase in reported and attempted burglaries in the Boroughbridge area and you are well advised to follow the basic security advice detailed below. If you are going away on holiday or visiting relatives please advise the Unit welfare office on 01423 321617 or if you are travelling at short notice please call the guardroom on 01423 321590. If you notice any suspicious behaviour or strangers in the area call the guardroom immediately, if you fear there is an intruder dial 999 immediately.

More than a third of all burglaries are crimes of opportunity, where the burglar enters through unlocked doors or windows. Keep your home secure.

Household Security
Ensure you lock all doors and windows, even when you are at home. If
no one is home during the evening, leave a light on and a radio playing.
Consider using a timing device.
Fit outside security lighting and an alarm, and ensure they are in
working order
Don't forget to turn them on when you are out and when you go
to bed
Don't leave ladders or garden tools lying around outside as they
can help thieves gain access to your property
Remember to lock all gates, sheds and garage door

Zumba Dance-NOTICE

THERE WILL BE NO MORE ZUMBA DANCE SESSIONS ON A TUESDAY-THE INSTRUCTOR HAS STARTED ANOTHER CLASS IN RIPON ON A FRIDAY AND CAN NO LONGER MAKE THE TUESDAY CLASS. I WILL LOOK AT ALTERNATIVES, BUT WE NEED AT LEAST 10 LADIES ON A REGULAR BASIS TO ATTRACT A FITNESS INSTRUCTOR UP TO THE AIRFIELD.

Bus schedule

Following enquiries made this morning, the 142/143 bus route will run as per the harrogate Coach Travel until Saturday 16th April.

From Monday 18th April Harrogate Coach travel and Eddie Brown tours are running the service, in effect there will be no disruption to service.

Both timetables are availible from the Unit Welfare Office and from the respective web sites.

Notice from Harrogate Coach Travel

Changes to Services 142/143

After losing the tender for operating the whole service from Ripon to York, it was beginning to look like there would only be one bus every 2 hours, as this was all North Yorkshire County Council are prepared to pay for. After great deliberation, we are continuing to run a number of these services commercially (without subsidy), although they will need to be well used to continue operating. We will be offering 10 journey, and monthly tickets on the bus and termly passes by Mail order which will be able to be used on any bus on the 142/143. If you buy a 10 journey ticket, you will only pay for 8 and then get 2 extra free.
However, we WILL NOT accept tickets issued by the other operator. To travel on our bus, you need to have a ticket issued by us.

Message sent on behalf of MHS Communications

MHS has been informed by a customer that he received a cold call from 2 individuals who produced SSE Identity Cards and stated that MHS has brokered a deal with SSE who are the providers of all gas and electricity to the UK and that if a customer is with a power company like EON or NPOWER then the bill they receive includes their fuel costs plus commission. They go on to say that a 22% reduction in the bill for energy can be achieved because this is what MHS has brokered with SSE and invite the customer to sign a change of contract form which included a direct debit.

There is no truth in this and neither DE nor MHS has brokered any sort of deal.  We believe that this is a scam aimed at coercing customers into signing a new energy contract.  Please be on your guard against such practices.

Thank you,

Youth Club Easter Day out

Hello everyone.

The youth club in association with Army Welfare Services (AWS), are running a day out to The National Railway Museum in York. We are going on what should be a most enjoyable visit to one of the biggest railway museums in Europe.

Details are as follows:

Date: Wednesday 20th April.

Timings: Pick up at 0930. Depart from museum 1630, estimate back to the Community Centre at 1730.

Cost: A mere £1 per person!

Who can go: All children who are signed up as Youth Club members. Parents/Guardians are also more than welcome.

How do you sign up for this adventure: Pick up a medical consent form for EACH person going, along with a booking form. Return both to the Youth Club (With payment) by 6th April.

No forms or payment? Without these I have to say you will not get on the bus!!

Everyone who is coming is advised to bring a packed lunch and drinks to last the day. With most of the exhibits inside the weather should not disrupt our day too much, but do take adequate precautions with coats etc.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask.

So come along and get involved. Kathryn from AWS has organized this day and is keen to see just how well the Youth Club is doing. You never know, you may also like to come and help out at one of our regular Wednesday evening meetings!! Just ask for details.

All the team look forward to receiving your completed forms for this event. If it is a success there is more to come.

Bernie.
